The StrongStart BC early learning centre officially opened at Christine Morrison Elementary School this week.

“Young learners, their families and the community of Mission will benefit from the addition of this StrongStart BC centre,” said Maple Ridge-Mission MLA Marc Dalton.

“Early learning centres such as these help prepare children for success in school and life.”

StrongStart BC is a free early learning program for preschool-aged children accompanied by a parent or caregiver. A qualified early-childhood educator leads activities, including stories, music, and arts, to help children grow linguistically, emotionally and socially, and become comfortable in a school-like setting.

The Mission school district has received $50,000 for the Christine Morrison StrongStart BC centre. This includes $20,000 to prepare in-school space, including renovations and the purchase of new equipment and learning materials, and $30,000 to fund this year’s operating costs, including staff, professional development, supplies and healthy snacks.

“The Ministry of Education’s commitment to the Strong Start BC program supports our board of education’s commitment to giving our youngest learners the greatest opportunities for success,” said Mission board of education chair Carol Hamilton.

“In order for every child to succeed it is critical that we help them acquire the literacy skills that are so essential.”
