Mission forest fire claims one hectare

A lightning strike has caused a forest fire north of Mission on the east side of Pitt Lake.
The one hectare fire has drawn Coastal Fire Centre (CFC) workers to the site, with approximately 23 firefighters battling the blaze, alongside three helicopters and an air tanker, said CFC spokesperson Donna MacPherson.
The fire was reported by a fisherman Thursday morning, and MacPherson said the fire had been smoldering for several days. The lighting storm blew through the area last week, and the accompanying moisture kept the fire at bay and undetected, but the recent dry weather has given the conflagration more fuel.
There are no buildings threatened, said MacPherson.
