Police investigate double homicide

Police say the victims of a double homicide in Mission Monday afternoon were targeted.

Thirty-seven-year-old Lisa Cheryl Dudley and her boyfriend 33-year-old Guthrie Jolan McKay were found inside their home in the 31000 block of Greenwood Drive around 4:45 p.m. in what police call “medical distress.”

McKay died inside the house, and emergency personnel tried to save Dudley, who was suffering from gunshot wounds. She was taken by ambulance to a medical helicopter waiting in a nearby field to transport her to hospital. A team spent about 20 minutes working on her before moving her to the chopper, but it never left the ground as she succumbed to her injuries.

It was not apparent to first responders at the scene what caused McKay’s death, said Cpl. Dale Carr of the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team, which was called in to work on the case. “It may be more apparent when the coroner takes a look.”

However, Carr noted that police will “likely never talk about McKay’s injuries because it’s information at this point, only the killer will know.”

This will help protect the integrity of the investigation, said Carr. Police have not yet established a motive for the killings, and there is no indication that it was drug or gang related.

Neighbours have reported hearing gunshots in the area four days before the murders occurred, and police are trying to determine if there is a connection in the case.

“It’s a very quiet, nice neighbourhood,” area resident Kirsten Jensen told reporters. “Everyone knows each other.”

Another neighbour, who identified himself as Erwin said he has met Dudley “a few times” and added McKay had befriended some young teens in the area and had showed them tricks on a dirt bike.

Police expect an autopsy will be conducted later this week. In the meantime, investigators are trying to determine the couple’s activities over the past week. Anyone with information about them is asked to call the IHIT tip line at 1-877-543-9217. For anonymous tips, call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS.
