Mission's new Busy Bus took its maiden voyage Tuesday morning.
The Mission Association for Seniors Housing (MASH) recently took over the administration of the community asset, and has been fundraising in earnest for months to cover the $170,000 cost for the new 17-passenger unit, which can accommodate a combination of walk-on and wheelchair users.
A new bus was needed as the old one spent more time in the shop than on the road. It has upgraded safety features and is fully air-conditioned, and is available for Mission seniors. The bus will cost user groups $38 an hour driving time, and $20 an hour when sitting idle while seniors are enjoying an activity.
The bus is for pre-planned outings, and the dispatch number is 604-826-3838, answered Monday to Friday, from 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. Senior groups with special events or activities they wish to attend are encouraged to inquire four weeks in advance to assist coordination of the requests.
Several Mission organizations have contributed funds, including $50,000 from the Mission Health Care Auxiliary, $10,000 from the OAPO and $2,500 from the Sasquatch Lions. Fundraising is still ongoing, and donors will be recognized graphically on the bus once fundraising ends.
