The sophisticated sounds of harp, viola and flute will grace the stage of the Clarke Theatre on Nov. 7, as Trio Verlaine from Vancouver perform as part of Classical Mission’s 2009-10 concert series.
The unique Trio will perform a variety of works spanning over 200 years of musical styles, from young, humourous Beethoven to a sophisticated work commissioned for the Trio in 2008, “Six Departures” by Jeffrey Cotton.
The performance also carries the theme of Remembrance Day through English composer Arnold Bax’s “Elegiac Trio” whose atmospheric undertones of Celtic music memorialize Ireland’s Easter Uprising of 1916.
Perhaps the most intriguing aspect of the concert will be works by Debussy and Ravel, since the unique combination of harp, viola and flute seems especially suited to the light and kaleidoscopic air of French music, say the concert’s promoters.
The Trio will perform Debussy’s Sonata for flute, viola and harp, which is billed as “rarely heard, but deeply soul-searching.”
Ravel’s Sonatine, originally written as a piano solo, but arranged by the master harpist Carlo Salzedo, will also be featured. The story goes that Ravel was alive to hear his arrangement and was delighted by it: he wished he had thought of it himself!
Each player of Trio Verlaine, Heidi Krutzen (harp), Lorna McGee (flute), and David Harding (viola) is a distinguished musician. Together they draw on a wealth of experience and imagination.
They have appeared together at many of North America’s finest chamber music festivals, and can be heard frequently on NPR in the States and CBC radio in Canada.
At 7 p.m., ticket-holders can attend a free Pre-Concert Chat hosted by artistic director Graham Yates who will interview members of Trio Verlaine.
The main concert begins at 8 p.m.
