The Me 2 We club at Heritage Park Secondary School is organizing a community fundraiser to help the world.

The event takes place on Tuesday, Jan. 19 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the school.

Details are still being finalized, but those attending should bring canned goods, an open mind, and some spending money.

Drama students at the school will be performing, and there will be some creative writing as well as an auction. Some of the items up for sale are a handmade and embroidered bag, and eight handmade handbags from Thailand. The money raised from auction will go back to the women who made them.

“They were given to us by Project Kah Feh, which sends the money back to Thailand,” explained Dan Crich, event planner for the club.

The Me 2 We club at Heritage Park was formed shortly after Me 2 We Day, which took place at GM Place last September.

“Our school was inspired after some students attended the Me 2 We day in Vancouver,” explained Crich, “and since that, we have started our own club and have started numerous fundraiser to raise money for different causes.”

The club has held fundraisers at the school, and next week’s event is the first time the community get a chance to get involved.

One of the ongoing fundraisers at the school is called Change to Change, where a club member stands at the end of the line in the cafeteria collecting any leftover change a student may have after paying for lunch.

“Although it may seem small, we have raised a significant amount doing that,” said Crich.

The club supports organizations like World Vision and Free the Children, which sends people to Africa to build houses and schools, etc.

Free the Children also sends out challenges to clubs, such as the Halloween for Hunger, which raised non-perishable food donations for the local food bank.

“Our school collected over 700 cans from going out on Halloween to trick or treat for canned food,” Crich added.

The school also participated in the Vow of Silence, which raised awareness about children and adults in Africa who don’t get a say about anything.

Locally, the group helped host a Community Christmas Dinner, offering a delicious holiday meal to the less fortunate in Mission.

“It was quite an event and it was very touching to hear life stories from people that came for a meal,” said Crich.

All these causes the club supports indirectly supports students at the school, according to Crich.
