Bring your coins Oct. 24
Updated: October 05, 2009 9:55 AM
Mission residents are being asked to collect coins and bring them to the Future Shop Daycare (32880 Ninth Ave., just behind Mission Secondary School) Oct. 24 between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. for a special weigh-in at Mission Community Services' Penny Lane Fundraiser and barbecue.
The first Penny Lane Fundraiser took place last June and raised $950 for Mission Community Services. Participation from individuals and organizations like Mission Fire/Rescue Service, municipal hall and the Sikh Temple helped make last year’s event a success.
Marilynne Davis, MCSS president and Penny Lane coordinator, hopes to increase the amount raised this year by involving all the schools and spreading the word throughout the community.
“There will be cans in local businesses, and people are encouraged to start their own coin drives amongst their friends, family and associates. This is a great way to bring many small contributions together in a way that will make significant positive changes that affect people’s lives.”
Funds raised at the Penny Lane coin drive will be used to help fund the many programs for children and youth offered by community services. One of these programs, Future Shop Daycare, allows students who are parents to stay in school. Students know that their child’s needs are being met while they are gaining the tools they need to be successful. More information on all of the programs can be accessed at www.missioncommunityservices.bc.ca.
Special prizes will be awarded to groups or individuals who are most successful in their coin collecting. Anyone wishing a coin jar or more information should call 604-826-3634.
