A week-long trip to Skatin Reserve saw a group of Mission youth and adults repair some key pieces of the tiny community.
The reserve is located about five hours drive from here, through Whistler and Pemberton to Mt. Currie, followed by a 50 kilometre drive along a less-than-stellar gravel road, said Youth Unlimited's Barry MacLeod, who organized the trip.
The voyage was very successful, he remarked. "It worked out better than I could have imagined."
The 28-person strong group removed and rebuilt a playground, renovated the front deck of the community hall, added brand new front doors, completed painted the interior and exterior of the gathering place.
There are only about 100 people who live on the reserve; most band members live in surrounding communities, and a high number can be found in Mission, said MacLeod.
And along the way, the group made friends with the residents, and provided a positive example for others.
Through the Missionites efforts, it helped some of the community members "realize they could do improvements in their own community," MacLeod added.
He is hoping to repeat the trip next year, gathering more people so that the goodwill can be extended further out into the area.
