Help food bank fill shelves
Mission Food Bank coordinator Phil Hope says donations are needed to help keep the shelves full.

Summer is all about enjoying time outdoors and relaxing with family and friends, but it should also be the time to think about your fellow man.
The Mission Food Bank is running precipitously low on supplies, and coordinator Phil Hope is encouraging local residents to help fill the shelves at the Logan Avenue location.
"We're busier than we've ever been," said Hope. "We're now averaging [giving out] 300 hampers a month."
Donations are traditionally harder to come by in the summer months, he admitted, but volunteers are noticing even more people asking for help.
"There seems to be less money out there, and with all the people laid-off due to the recession, our [food] supply is at its lowest," Hope said.
The food bank has been at its new location for nearly a year, situated on the back of the newly opened Logan Place emergency shelter at 32646 Logan Ave.
"We have a bigger space, better parking and this site has given better access to more people," Hope commented.
If you are interested in donating, the food bank specifically requires non-perishable goods, and items for babies, such as Pampers, size three or bigger. Cash is also helpful, he added, because the food bank is able to get a better deal on food than the average customer.
• Hope was also warning the community about fraudulent collectors. An individual claiming to be from the Mission Food Bank has been spotted in Mission recently going door-to-door canvassing.
"We do not go door to door," warned Hope. "We do not solicit for donations."
