Hitting new heights

Last Friday, September 18, thirty-one grade 7 students, teachers and parents from Silver Creek and C.E. Barry Schools hiked to the top of the highest mountain in Manning Park (Mount Frosty) with the Mountain School program. The Mountain School, a School District #78 program, provides an opportunity for students to be active and to explore the trails and mountains that surround their communities. Mount Frosty, at 8000 feet (2408 metres) is a challenging climb for anyone who attempts it, says program coordinator John Lang. The round trip distance to the peak is just under 25 kilometres. 'At a time when society is becoming increasingly concerned with adolescent inactivity, childhood obesity and fewer opportunities for young people to be involved in the outdoors, this group has much to be proud of,' adds Lang.
