Facing a year under provincial budget cuts the Fraser Cascade school district has pulled in their belt at many levels including administration. With the promotion of Karen Nelson to superintendent, after former superintendent Wes Neumeier returned to the prairies, district principal, Scott Benwell was promoted to assistant superintendent. The school district did not backfill his district principal position. A data entry position at the school district level was also not filled. At the school level the principal complement was reduced “by one in response to declining enrolment,” adds Natalie Lowe-Zucchet, secretary-treasurer for School District #78.

Tennis courts victim of budget cuts

The tennis courts at CE Barry have been removed and the area reseeded in grass. “They were becoming hazardous and were no longer able to be used to play tennis as the surface wasn’t even,” adds Lowe-Zucchet. “It is mainly a cost issue that the courts couldn’t be replaced. My understanding is that the school district did not pay for them initially and with courts available in town already, we chose to enlarge the (sports) field.”

HSS still under construction

The Hope Secondary seismic upgrade may be complete but work continues on the high school. The new section of the school is being rebuilt after water was found to be entering the building. “There was some water ingress which was causing some rotting of the wood. As we were finishing the rest of the school it seemed the ideal time to tackle this problem as well,” says Lowe-Zucchet. A water line also broke within the school damaging the gym floor. The flooring was replaced early this year under the school district’s insurance policy.
