An explosive blast that reverberated off the mountains surrounding Hope at 3 p.m. Monday afternoon was a controlled explosion by the Navy’s bomb disposal unit.
The team was in Hope after a staffer at the Hope landfill discovered a 1915 to 1920 era practice hand grenade in the main garbage container, on Sunday evening.
The dump was closed awaiting the Navy team’s arrival from Vancouver Island this afternoon.
As a practice grenade contains a small quantity of explosives the team used C-4 explosive to dispose of it on site, after moving it out of the metal garbage container.
It is not uncommon for the team to discover poorly disposed of explosives, sometimes kept as war souvenirs. They recommend that should you come across a shell or grenade not to move it yourself but call the police who will see to its proper disposal.
