A passerby and a CP railway crew assisted Hope police capture two auto theft suspects, on Thursday, Aug. 14.
The suspects dumped the blue Dodge pick-up truck they were driving in a ditch under the Highway 7 overpass just north of the Hope-Fraser Bridge at around 3:30 p.m..
Railway workers gave chase to the two men who had scrambled out the pick-up truck and up the embankment leading to Highway 1. The two men separated, and crewmembers last saw them headed into the bush in two different directions.
"Police arrived on scene and determined the vehicle has been stolen on August 10th from Chilliwack," reports RCMP media relations officer Lea-Anne Dunlop.
Lower Mainland Integrated Police Dog Services were called and an Abbotsford Police dog handler attended to conduct a search for the suspects while Hope RCMP established a containment perimeter, adds Dunlop.
The search of the heavily bushed area between the Fraser River and Highway 7 continued until 5:15 p.m. when the dog and his handler located one of the suspects. By 5:45 p.m. the second suspect was in custody.
"Two male suspects, age 29 of Kamloops and age 25 of Abbotsford, have been held in custody to appear in Chilliwack Provincial Court today and face charges of possession of stolen property over $5000 and flight from police."
"Both suspects are known to police," added Dunlop.
