Family searches for missing man

About three years ago, Surrey resident Yashpal Mehay decided it was time to get out of the taxi business.

He told his family and friends that he wanted something that was less hazardous.

The married father of two sold his licence and used the money to buy a share of a gas station in Clinton, a community of 750 people north of Cache Creek.

Mehay continued to live in Surrey, driving the Fraser Canyon to Clinton every other week.

He would sometimes pick up hitchhikers to have someone to talk to during the long drive.

On July 14, he drove his 2004 grey Mazda MPV van (licence plate number 494 KVK) to Abbotsford to load up supplies for the gas station store.

He was last seen in the Abbotsford Costco at 2:50 p.m.

When Mehay didn’t arrive at the Clinton gas station the next day, his family called police.

The 40-year-old Mehay hardly fits the profile of a runaway spouse, Surrey RCMP said.

He has never gone missing before.

Searchers have re-traced every inch of the route he would have taken, looking to see if the van went off the road.

The family even hired an aircraft to fly over the highway.

Police have also conducted an aerial search.

Anyone with any information about the whereabouts of Yashpal Mehay is asked to call the Surrey RCMP 604-599-7776. A reward is being offered by the family.
