Rock work
Roman Petryk gives his nephew Ian Zylicz a lesson on rock working before the young man heads back to college. Petryk and Zylicz are creating a hand-chiseled rock wall to cradle the District of Hope sign and front garden, part of the Memorial Park Spirit Squares project. Petryk’s work will add a little local history to the park design as Petryk himself was trained by Carl Sosnowski, the man who years ago Petryk believes would have built the rock wall that still protects the entranceway to the district hall. Like his mentor, Petryk uses carbide-tipped chisel and a five-pound sledge hammer to break the river rock into flat chucks. The flat rocks are then pieced together for their fit, shape and colour before being locked together with masonry cement.
