An old fashioned summer market is in the works for July 11 at the Christ Church (Anglican) National Historic Site.

“So far, the planning for the Community Summer Market is coming along great. We have some wonderful door prizes, entertainment, competitions, games and of course merchants lined up for the day,” says Darla Dickinson, supervisor for the Christ Church (Anglican) National Historic Site.

The plan for this year’s summer market is to bring an old fashioned flair to it, similar to what communities would have come out to 150 years ago in order to shop, socialize and relax for a spell.

“So far this theme is coming along splendidly. We have prizes from Hell’s Gate, Fraser River Raft Expeditions and the Yale Historic Site for the best decorated table and the best dressed in period costume for adults and children,” says Dickinson. “Mayor Laurie French, dressed in his period garb, is our honorary judge and some ladies from the Fort Langley National Historic Site are also planning on coming out in costume to help us celebrate.”

The Community Summer Market runs from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and will offer market booths, live entertainment, old fashioned games, guided tours of the site, a demonstration of Hope’s history in photographs and old time implements, food and more. “It should be a really fun day, we have Debbie Zervini in charge of the games and so far there is blind man’s bluff, three legged races, tug of war and bocce so both the adults and children can participate if they desire,” says Dickinson.

Local store owners, merchants or businesses are encouraged to book a spot for the day. “It is a great opportunity for store owners to advertise and set up shop within a central location in a fun social atmosphere,” says Dickinson. “So far we have had a great response to it from the community and local businesses. There are still some stalls available, spot rental is $10.”

The event is the first of many planned over the next two years as the Christ Church (Anglican) National Historic Site gear up for their 150th anniversary. The site is located on the corner of Park St and Fraser Ave.
