Their company name is more than catchy it’s a reflection of its owners. Polished 2 Perfection, on Wallace Street, is operated by two young women who are exactly that – perfectionists. If it means taking an extra half an hour or more to make sure their customer’s nails are the best they can be, it's well worth the extra time, say co-owners Candice Braden and sister Breanna Gracia.
The two daughters of Laurie Schiefermeier and Max Gracia came by that entrepreneurial spirit honestly coming from a long line of family business owners, including Laurie's stepmother, Dodie Schiefermeier, who is well known in the Hope area for her successful Caribou Restaurant and Hope Deli, the forerunner of the Blue Moose. Now mom, dad and daughters, the second and third generation, have joined forces in a new business venture in Hope.
Together Candice and Breanna, with a dedicated helping hand from mom and dad, set out to get the business training they needed to offer an extensive line of personal care services from a top of the line tanning booth to delicate hand-crafted nail design.
High fashion has always been the passion of Breanna’s, her favourites Christian Dior, Baby Phat, and Guess. With that passion for fashion and the chance to work with her sister in a brand new shop she headed off to the New Image College of Fine Arts and a 500-hour course including everything from reflexology, massage, anatomy and diseases. The nail technician learned that her responsibilities lay beyond making sure her client’s nails are gorgeous, with a French style polish and inset gem stone, free hand Nail Art’ or gel nail enhancements. As a nail technician you also offer vital foot care many times helping keep an elderly or diabetic client healthy.
During a manicure or pedicure, a wax dips can also “loosen stiff joints, and act as an intense moisturizer, a vegan foot soak detoxifies. “I just like having people feel good.”
“Fashion nails may be the finishing touch to a perfect outfit, but I can make a foot look amazing too. I love having a client take a positive experience home with them and feel good about themselves.”
Night clubbing in the city may be a favourite for the 21-year-old, but life is not all about fashion when it comes to a very outdoorsy side for this “girly girl." Her favourites include swimming, canoeing and fishing. “And no I am not afraid to get dirty… if I break a nail, I just fix it,” jokes Breanna.
Sister Candice, mom to four-year-old Joshua, gained her training at the Hair Art Academy, a 1500-hour course that gave her the experience she needs for baby’s first haircut or clients in their seventies.
Candice specializes in capturing that perfect colour and cut for you – including colour correcting a past error in judgment. “I take into consideration so many underlying factors in colouring hair, whether the current colour is too light, too dark, too ash, too warm, multi-tonal, your hair texture, type, the natural colour, a previous perm, previous colours and underlying pigments."
“To get you your colour I may mix together three or four different colours; it’s chemistry, and the laws of colour…. and it’s fun, it makes me think.”
“I had to take chemistry, biology, physiology, everything you would imagine not having to take in order to work in this industry.”
Have a special evening planned, want a striking look for grad, an upcoming wedding? Candice is also a pro at formal styling.
