Kent Elementary in Agassiz is just one of the school's in the Fraser Health region that has reported higher than normal absentee rates in the last few weeks.

The school reportedly hit a 10 per cent absenteeism rate.

But the school's principal couldn't say whether the absent children are home sick with H1N1.

"We are noticing a higher than normal absenteeism because of the flu. But we can't confirm or deny if we have H1N1 at our school," Chris Wejr told The Observer on October 27. "Basically, they have stopped doing the swabs and they are treating all the flu the same."

Either way, he says sick children should be home resting, and not at school spreading germs.

"We are encouraging parents to keep kids home if they have flu-like symptoms."

Unity Christian on Hack-Brown Road was closed last week for two days, due to abnormally high absenteeism.
