The District of Kent and Harrison Hot Springs both won an award at the provincial conference for Communities in Bloom over the weekend.

The District of Kent, which wasn't officially competing in the annual community awards, won for Best Floral Displays, provincial wide.

"This is one of the main category wins, and is quite an honour, " says Kerry Hilts, director of Community, Recreation and Parks Services for the District of Kent.

"Congratulations to Sandy (Maher) and all of the public works crews that are involved in making Agassiz so welcoming and colourful."

The conference was held at the Harrison Hot Springs Resort and Spa.

An award will be presented by Kent council to the local committee at its next meeting, on October 13.

Harrison Hot Springs, whose Communities in Bloom committee sponsored the event, also faired well, winning first place

"I am pleased to report that we received many compliments from delegates, judges and CiB executives on our committee’s program of events," Councillor Dave Harris says.

"The highlight for most was the Shoreline tours boat trip around Echo Island and into Cascade Bay with historical and landmark commentary by Lis Scotson. Our ten guest speakers provided the conference attendees with interesting information to tie into our conference theme of Living with our Land."

Guest speakers included Maureen Raymond on Nature-scapes, Dr. Mike Pearson on Riparian Areas and Dr. Peter Awram on Honey Bees, Mike Johnson from the DFO on the 2009 salmon run, Debra Amrein Boyes on cheese making, Georgia Kliever on edible Flowers, Teresa Baxter on landscaping with nature, Gerry Nootebos on community gardens, Sandy Maher on soil remediation, and Tom Harris on arboriculture and urban forestry.

On Saturday at the awards ceremony, 18 participating communities were recognized and rewarded for their efforts.

"I am very proud to say that Harrison Hot Springs was awarded five blooms and received a special award for being the provincial winner in our population category (under 2,000).

A special mention was made for the Harrison Festival of the Arts.

The Communities in Bloom committee for the District of Hope was awarded the privilege of hosting the 2010 conference.
