50 Years Ago, 1959

Long-time resident, Harry Fooks was awarded the Legion Certificate of Merit by the Agassiz Branch #42, the highest award in the power of the branch to award, for his unswerving loyalty to Legion affairs over the period of two wars. It was pointed out that Mr. Fooks had steadily refused payment for his services.

At a scout meeting in Harrison Memorial Hall, Mr. John Green was elected scoutmaster, with Rene Dahinden his assistant. Hal Rhodes became Vice President, Ed North became Treasurer, and K. Borton, Marvel MacPherson, Jack Theriault and Arne Vogstad formed the Executive.

An investigation into the accidental death of Mr. Fred Ponto at the Henry A. Larson Logging Co. was begun. A one-ton four-wheel drive truck carrying welding equipment rolled over on a steep logging road. Mr. Ponto was found unconscious about 20 feet down the road from the truck and died later in Chilliwack hospital. The accident occurred when the truck was being driven up a steep hill, and possibly the brakes failed or the vehicle rolled backward and overturned when the gears were being changed.

14 members of the Book Club met at the home of Mrs. John Green to enjoy a selection of four book reviews presented by Mrs. J. Bowron, Mrs. O. Erickson, Mrs. D. McCallum and Mrs. J. Green.
