Summer is here and fun opportunities abound around Agassiz & Harrison!

The wonderful weekly literacy event Story Time in the Park is back for the summer!

It is on Wednesdays at 11 a.m. in Pioneer Park until August 5 then it moves to Harrison’s new Spirit Square for the rest of August.

Expect entertainment, lunch, and an excellent story to be read, a copy of which will be given to families attending this free event. It is sponsored by literacy supporters such as Success by 6.

Family Place is having a party! Join us for Family Place’s Summer Send-off on Thursday, July 30 from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. at 7272 Morrow Road.

This free event will have a bouncy castle, food, sports, crafts, face painting, books, story time with the librarian, door prizes, and children’s entertainer Mr. I. This event is sponsored by Family Place’s Parent Advisory Committee and Success by 6.

Kent Leisure Services is offering Recreation on Tour, Thursdays from 1 p.m.- 3 p.m. This free event will have face painting, scavenger hunts, arts and crafts, sports, games, story time with the librarian, and a prize draw each day.

arents of preschoolers must stay on site. Cancelled in the event of rain. Date and Location: July 23 Evergreen Park, July 30 Westlin Park, August 6 Schep Park, August 27 Dr. McCaffrey Park

Leisure Services also offers Red Cross Swim Preschool Lessons at the Ferny Coombe pool during the summer months. These lessons are intended for children age 3 months to 5 years and their parents, and allow swimmers to enter various levels based on age and ability.

Kids will enjoy the animal themes and mascots that have been added to enhance learning and fun. Lessons are 30 minutes in length over 9 days at a cost of $36 per set. See the Spring & Summer 2009 guide for more details.

Summer is a great time for swimming but remember to play it safe! According to the Lifesaving Society, drowning is the second leading cause of preventable death for children under 10 years of age and children under 5 are most at risk.

Most toddlers drown in backyard pools, so remember “if you’re not within arms’ reach of your child, you’ve gone too far.
