The holidays are fast approaching and with that comes the challenge of finding that perfect gift; something thoughtful, beautiful, and unique. Something that will appreciate in value if not for the sheer joy of owning it. That extra special gift may be waiting for you at the Ruby Creek Art Gallery's 4th Annual Open House.
This year's event will be held on November 28th in the Community Hall next to the Gallery where there will be an exciting assortment of items to choose from and delicious appetizers to sample.
Some of the work featured will be from artists such as April White, hailing from Haida Gwaii - Masset, Pauline Lawson Heiltsuk First Nations and Andy Everson representing Kwakwaka'wakw - Comox. There are limited edition prints, handmade drums, hand carved cedar boxes, and intricate gold and silver jewelry. The featured artist for this year's event is 'Drumspeaker' Jerry Chapman representing Skawahlook First Nation with his handcrafted custom drums.
The Ruby Creek Gallery features other artists as well, from as far away as the Queen Charlotte and Vancouver Islands, all the way through the Fraser Valley and into the Interior. Most of the collection is traditional art but there are a few pieces that will speak to the contemporary art collector as well.
People have their own interpretation of native art but the staff are available to help clarify what the artists have tried to convey through their works as they have a close working relationship with each one. Most, if not all, of the art is hand chosen specifically for the gallery for their unique stories told by the artists. The symbols and meanings of these themes have been established and passed down over centuries; although varying slightly from region to region, they share the same common theme.
The Open House is being hosted from 3 p.m. until 5 pm, and will be located about 15 minutes out of Agassiz on Highway 7, look for the rustic log building with the red roof.
It is well worth the drive and you may be lucky enough to win one of the exquisite door prizes to take home with your distinctly memorable gift.
