Cannes, France & Sundance, USA are famous for International Film Festivals, but you won’t need a passport to attend Agassiz’ 2nd Annual Social Justice Film Festival, October 23 and 24. The films have been selected to broaden our view of local and global concerns. The majority of the films are made here in B.C. as we have an incredible wealth of film makers right here in our on backyard.

Opening night features Fierce Light by filmmaker V. Ripper. In this critically-acclaimed film, we are taken around the world to examine what is possible when human beings, faced with a world in crisis, rise to their absolute best. Fierce Light will be shown at 7 p.m. at the Agassiz United Church.

The festival continues on Saturday morning, at 9:30 a.m., with Tableland. Where documentary features such as Fast Food Nation and Supersize Me point out the faults with over processed foods, Tableland offers ideas for change, by shining a spotlight on the work of small, local farmers and gardeners across North America.

Then at 11 a.m., the focus goes overseas. Raised to Be Heroes profiles young Israelis who have refused to serve in their army.

Following a lunch of soup & buns, two more films will be screened.

At 1:30 p.m., Strong Coffee shows the story of a women’s coffee-growing cooperative in Peru.

Finally, at 3 p.m., examine the tragic events of the missing women from Vancouver’s Downtown East Side in the film Finding Dawn.

Admission will be by donation, and on Saturday the lunch will be $4.

Mark your calendar for Friday, October 23 and Saturday, October 24 and head to Agassiz United Church. This event is hosted and sponsored by Agassiz United Church with support from the Kent Harrison Arts Council.
