The W.J. Mouat Hawks and Rick Hansen Hurricanes both locked up second place in their respective high school football divisions thanks to road victories last Friday.
The Hawks scored early and often en route to a 35-6 win over the Lord Tweedsmuir Panthers in Surrey, while the Hurricanes wrapped up the regular season with a 21-6 triumph over the Mission Roadrunners.
The Hawks, ranked No. 4 among AAA teams in the province, wasted little time putting the Panthers in their place. On Mouat's first play from scrimmage, fullback Drew Chung found the end zone on a 57-yard scoring scamper. On the ensuing Tweedsmuir possession, Allan Dicks blocked a Panthers punt in the end zone, and Tanner Hamade recovered the ball to give the Hawks a 14-0 lead.
Quarterback Cam Bedore took over from there, tossing a TD pass to Luke Friesen and rushing for a pair of scores himself as the Hawks won going away. Tyler Declare paced the Mouat defence with 11 tackles, adding to his province-leading total of 105.
The Hawks (4-1 in Eastern Conference play) open the playoffs with a tough match-up against the Notre Dame Jugglers on Saturday at 5:30 p.m. at Langley's McLeod Stadium.
The Jugglers, the third-place team in the Western Conference, boast a record-breaking running back in Stephen Spagnuolo, who led the province in rushing with 2,166 yards and 31 touchdowns this season.
"They just try to grind you down with the hope that Spagnuolo will break a couple of big ones," Hawks coach Denis Kelly analyzed. "It's not complicated, really. They'll be very physical, and the test will be if we can corral this guy Spagnuolo and limit his yards."
The Hurricanes, No. 3 in the provincial AA rankings, open the playoffs on Friday, when they take on Nanaimo's John Barsby Bulldogs at 3 p.m. at McLeod Stadium.
Mark McCutcheon had a monster game in Hansen's final regular season contest against Mission, accounting for all three of the Hurricanes' touchdowns. The senior fullback rushed for two majors, and got a third through the air on a six-yard pass from Greg Bowcott.
McCutcheon also led the defence with eight tackles from his middle linebacker spot, and blocked a Roadrunners' extra point for good measure as the Hurricanes sewed up a 6-1 record in Mainland Conference play.
"We wanted to stop Mission's running game, and in order to do that, he needed to have a big week," Hansen coach Paul Gill said of McCutcheon. "He definitely came through."
