Abbotsford’s favourite turkey-time tournament, the Gobbler Classic, took over the fields at Exhibition Park last weekend.
The 32nd annual rugby tournament drew 12 teams from across the province, from as far away as Prince George, Williams Lake and Penticton.
“It was really a good event,” organizer Doug Primrose said. “The weather turned out well for us, and everyone had a really good time.”
Taking top honours on the pitch were the Surrey men and the Bayside women. Surrey doubled up on the Ex-Brits by a score of 24-12, while Bayside knocked off Williams Lake 30-15 in the title game.
The Gobbler doubles as a fundraiser for the Abbotsford Rugby Football Club, and Primrose said that approximately $11,000 was raised on the weekend.
The local club plays at home in regular season action this weekend, with the Abby women facing UBC and the men taking on Surrey. Men’s games start at 11:30 a.m. (Div. 3), 1 p.m. (Div. 2) and 2:30 p.m. (Div. 1).
