The Mennonite Educational Institute senior boys volleyball team validated its lofty provincial ranking, cruising through an elite 30-team field to win their home tournament on the weekend.

The Eagles, ranked No. 1 in the province among AA teams, dropped just one set in seven games en route to the title.

The Eagles received their stiffest test in the semifinals against Surrey’s Earl Marriott Mariners. The Mariners, ranked No. 2 in AAA, took a 13-10 lead in the third and deciding set, but the Eagles rallied to win 17-15. MEI’s comeback bid was boosted when the Mariners received a yellow card for arguing with the officials, which gave the Eagles a bonus point.

In the final, MEI staved off Vancouver’s David Thompson Secondary in straight sets (25-23, 25-23).

Grade 11 setter Tyler Koslowsky earned tournament MVP honours, while power Brent Siemens and libero Justin Wood were named all-stars.

Eagles coach Jeff Gamache credited his team’s defence and serving for the victory.

“We tell them where to serve, and a lot of guys are putting it in that spot every time,” Gamache noted. “We put a lot of teams in trouble because of how well we were serving.”

Gamache also noted that MEI's mega-tournament could not have happened without an incredible amount of help from parents and teachers.
