Abbotsford’s own golf pro Ray Stewart claimed the 2009 Canadian PGA Seniors’ Championship on Tuesday.

He fired a 68 in tough conditions to prevail with a 10-under par, two-shot victory at The Marshes Club in Kanata, Ont.

Ken Tarling of Sandford, Ont. finished second, followed by Surrey’s Norm Jarvis in third.

Stewart didn’t tee off until nearly four hours after his scheduled time, as thunderstorms caused two rain delays and threatened to derail the final round.

A PGA Tour and Canadian Tour veteran, Stewart is no stranger to bad weather, and posted birdies on holes nine, 11, 12, and 14 to grab a two-shot lead – one he wouldn’t relinquish.

His focus is now turned to qualifying for the Senior Open Championship.

Stewart is in London right now, bidding for one of nine open spots for the tournament, which runs from July 23 to 26 at Sunningdale Golf Club.

Stewart’s son, Brett Stewart, was also in action this week, but came up short in the BC Amateur Championship at Duncan Meadows Golf Course.
