Mariners earn split on the road
The Abbotsford Mariners earned a split on the road this past weekend. The locals beat Tacoma 5-3 and lost 1-0 to Kitsap.
The Abbotsford Mariners soccer squad split a pair of back-to-back road games over the weekend, winning the opener in Tacoma 5-3 on Friday, before dropping Saturday’s tilt with Kitsap 1-0.
Abbotsford (8-4-2, 14 points) sits in seventh in the USL Premier Development League’s Northwest Division.
The Mariners started off Friday’s game in Tacoma with a flurry, scoring three goals in the game’s opening 35 minutes before the Tide began their own rally, bringing the score to 4-3 for Abbotsford at the end of the first half.
Adrian Kekec scored two goals for the Mariners, while Spencer Schmidt added the fifth tally for insurance in the 83rd minute.
On Saturday, it was a strong second half from the first-place Kitsap Pumas that sealed Abbotsford’s fate. A strike from Kitsap’s Stephen Phillips in the 67th minute, off a cross from some pretty footwork by winger Alex Megson, was the game’s lone goal.
Nevertheless, it was a worthy effort from the Mariners, facing the league’s top team in a muggy stadium in front of a packed crowd.
With the win, the Pumas clinched the division’s regular season title, ensuring them top spot and a first-round bye heading into the playoffs.
Having been eliminated from the playoffs, the Mariners end their season with two road games again this weekend, taking on third-place Seattle on Friday and second-place Portland on Saturday.
