Abbotsford’s house league fastpitch teams turned in a series of stellar results at the provincial championships on the weekend.
The Abbotsford Cyclones squirt ‘C’ team (age 11 and 12) provided the major highlight for the local association, earning a bronze medal at their B.C. tournament in Richmond.
The Cyclones went 3-1 in round robin play, knocking off teams from Sooke, Kelowna and Westside. Game MVPs in the round robin were Tyler Lapeyre, Monica Annecchini, Laurel Hamm and Janelle Kent. In the playoffs, the Abby squad beat Richmond and Chilliwack to clinch the bronze medal.
Additionally, the Abbotsford peewee ‘C’ squad was fourth in B.C., while the midget ‘C’ team finished fifth.
The Abbotsford Bulldogs hosted the bantam ‘C’ provincials at Exhibition Park, and they finished out of the medals.
According to Abbotsford Minor Fastball Association president Mark Chapman, the 2009 season has been “better than expected.”
“We qualified nine teams for provincials,” he pointed out. “We also sent 12 teams to championship round at regionals, and we’ve never done that before.”
