Put heat on council
From the time of the first indication that the citizens of Abbotsford would be called upon to support the AHL, I have been carefully watching the comments of our council, including those of the mayor when asked about the time clock which set the citizens back two million dollars.
Mayor Peary supported this expense, claiming that it would bring in a lot of advertisement revenue. There is simply no realistic way for such revenue to begin to cover this expense. Maintenance of the clock in itself will eat up most of this revenue. One must ask for a detailed accounting of all the expenses incurred by the city in this matter.
The facts clearly show council was ripe for picking by the AHL and the costs incurred by the city in bringing this team should provide a lot of “heat” for the seats of council members.
I have nothing against professional sports, but the AHL is comprised of farm teams of the NHL, and there is absolutely no justifiable reason for the taxpayers in Abbotsford to be called upon to make any type of donation to them.
The NHL has more than enough funds, as proven by the salaries paid to the players, and for the AHL to ask for contributions from any city is totally and completely unjustified.
Council members that supported this expense should hang their heads in shame, and that includes the mayor.
They can glad-hand all they want but as citizens we simply ask that they act prudently with financial matters. This is one glaring example of their dismal failure to do so.
