Can we dispose of all those plastic bags?

Regarding the article “Abbotsford could cut waste 73 per cent” (Oct. 10). Since my family moved from Langley to Abbotsford three months ago I have spoken to a lot of people about the recycling program here.

This conversation began because I was stunned that the people who live here have to buy plastic bags to put their recycling in. Many of the people I’ve spoken to will not spend money to have to recycle, and secondly they can’t believe that the city wants us to put more plastic into the environment when there is a push world wide to get rid of plastic bags.

Although I agree with both of these points I am an avid recycler so I have continued to recycle despite the frustrating, awkward way Abbotsford goes about it.

I recommend the best system I have heard of which is having bins to put our recycling in that have lids so the rain doesn’t spoil the items.

Our garbage cans have lids, our yard waste cans have lids, so this seems quite reasonable.

That way my paper and cardboard recycling would not require putting more plastic bags into the environment.

Also a lot of that 73 per cent of Abbotsford would be willing to get on board. Please make it easier and less costly for us to recycle.
