Nothing but a tax grab
Updated: July 17, 2009 4:22 PM
I was talking with some friends about property tax this past weekend, and one friend from Chilliwack with a new $500,000 home paid $1,500.
Another friend in Surrey with a home similar in price to mine – $396,000 – also paid $1,500.
I, on the other hand, after my homeowners’ grant, paid $2,800.
Next I hear the city wants to add a gas tax to allow them to repair the roads, something Surrey has been able to do and stay within its $1,500-per-home budget.
Further, I was approached by a city dog licence inspector asking me to pay for a dog licence. This last is just absurd and nothing but a tax grab. The city provides virtually no support, as we have found when our dog was attacked by a large dog running loose.
In short, when is the city going to realize we are not a bottomless pit of money and start being financially responsible with our money?
Our property tax has climbed dramatically while we have been in Abbotsford and yet the quality and quantity of service has declined. Look at the state of our parks, or try to get your car on the road after a snowfall.
I am speechless at this mindless attitude.
