Stricter liquor laws
Your June 27 is disturbing. If our city’s liquor laws are the most restrictive in the Lower Mainland, we should consider it a plus for our city.
It seems that business dollars are at the heart of the issue. To insinuate that our young people need the kind of social life that includes more drinking outlets is a sad commentary on our societal structures and mindset.
It seems quite ironic that on the one hand we are losing control of alcohol-related problems, while on the other, would want to open the door a little farther for the problems to escalate. Consider the fact that according to a TV news report, our government and ICBC will be spending $250,000 per month to catch drunken drivers. The report also went on to say that on an average July 1 weekend we lose two lives, face 170 injuries and can expect 620 car crashes that are all related to the use of alcohol.
Do we want to add to that toll by making liquor more accessible? Do we really want to add to the woes of drunkenness and alcoholism? Do we really want to open the door to allow more families to live through the grief of having a loved one snatched from them like my family circle innocently did?
I think anyone with a sane mind would have a negative answer to each of those realities. I think that the City of Abbotsford should rather have greater restrictions than less.
