Bar Watch fair to all
I write in response to Mr. Rob Ashby’s letter on June 27. Perhaps Mr. Ashby should have done some fact-checking before he criticized the use of Bar Watch at a local “fine dining” restaurant.
Bar Watch may be new to the residents of Abbotsford, but anybody who ventures out of our city knows that it is implemented extensively in Metro Vancouver.
Mr. Ashby was also frustrated that an elderly gentleman was asked to produce his ID.
In order for Bar Watch to operate properly and fairly, every patron must have their ID scanned, regardless of their appearance. Otherwise, it becomes too easy for people to claim discrimination.
By scanning every ID, those implementing Bar Watch are not left to make judgment calls about who the unwanted visitors may be. Not every young person in Abbotsford with tattoos and a nice car is a criminal. In the same sentiment, many criminals look exactly like the “average Joe” sitting next to you at Tim Horton’s or at church.
I am pleased with the implementation of Bar Watch so we can all relax and enjoy a night out without concern.
