Police arrested a Mission man in connection to the robbery of a homeless man in Abbotsford on Wednesday night.

Wile Walsh, 22, is charged with one count of robbery after a 43-year-old homeless man was robbed at the Bourquin bus loop around 7p.m., said Const. Ian MacDonald.

The suspect allegedly threatened a 43-year-old homeless man suffering from a brain injury and took the limited amount of cash the victim possessed.

Money doesn't appear to be the impetus for the crime, MacDonald said.

"It wouldn't appear the motive in this instance was monetary, given the very small amount of money he got from the victim," he said.

"It was something more perverse...perhaps it was some twisted form of joke or way of feeling better about himself.

I think it's safe to say the suspect thought the incident was funny, but the victim and bystanders didn't share that opinon."

Officers were called out by people who witnessed the incident.

Investigators are grateful to them for helping police make the arrest, said MacDonald.

"It's important citizens got involved. When you see somebody vulnerable in this instance, he might not have made the call or been able to make the call."

An attacks against any individual in Abbotsford is serious but robberies of more vulnerable members of the community are particularly despicable and identifying and charging the suspects in these incidents is a priority for police, he added.

"Bullying, frightening and ultimately taking a minimal amount of money away from someone with the most limited of resources...you'd hope somebody would have better sense."

It is not believed Walsh is one of the two suspects that robbed a 59-year-old partially paralyzed woman near Blue Jay Street and Cardinal Avenue on July 13.

MacDonald said police are not seeing an increase in the number of crimes targeting vulnerable members of the community.

"It isn't common and it's not a trend we're seeing. These are two isolated incidents that happened within a couple weeks of one another."

Investigators still want anyone with information on the earlier attack against the woman near Blue Jay Street to contact the Abbotsford Police.

Walsh is next scheduled to appear in Abbotsford provincial court July 30.
