An Abbotsford reverend has been consecrated as a bishop with the Anglican Network in Canada (ANiC).
The Right Rev. Dr. Trevor Walters attended the service Friday (Nov. 13) in St. Catharines, Ont. and was among three bishops consecrated.
An installation service for Walters takes place in Abbotsford on Sunday at St. Matthew’s Anglican Church, where he serves as associate priest. The service begins at 3 p.m.
ANiC is a diocese in the Anglican Church in North America, which now numbers 33 parishes and eight forming congregations.
St. Matthew’s Anglican Church, along with three others, is still awaiting a Supreme Court decision on who owns its land and buildings – the congregation or the Diocese of New Westminster.
St. Matthew’s broke away in February 2008 from the diocese, led by Bishop Michael Ingham, who endorses same-sex unions.
The majority of the St. Matthew’s congregation was in favour of marriage only between a man and a woman, believing this was in accordance with “traditional Anglican ministry.”
Walters, and priests from other break-away churches, were asked to step down from their positions, but they refused. So did church trustees.
Meanwhile, the Diocese of New Westminster appointed new directors to the parishes.
The issue went to a three-week civil trial in June, but a ruling has not yet been made as to who owns the land and properties, which will determine who gets to stay.
The three other churches involved are all in Vancouver.
