Most
generous
Abbotsford-Mission has proved one of the most generous urban centres for charitable donations in Canada for a sixth
consecutive year, according to recent Statistics Canada data. In 2008, the census metropolitan area of Abbotsford-Mission had the highest median donation at $600, followed by Kelowna with a median of $380 and then Calgary at $360. There was a drop in the median donation in Abbotsford-Mission from 2007 when it was $620. Canadian tax file data indicated that total charitable donations were more than $8.1 billion in 2008, down 5.3 per cent from 2007.
However, the number of donors increased 1.7 per cent to just under 5.8 million people making contributions. The average
contribution was $250.
‘Bad’ heroin
Abbotsford Police are worried about particularly potent heroin being distributed in the
downtown core. Const. Ian MacDonald said some users have reported to patrolling
officers that “bad” heroin has been causing some severe
reactions, and police are
concerned about potential deaths. He said the increased potency could be intentional – a type of “marketing strategy” dealers use to get people hooked, and to make their product appear better than other sellers.’
$1 million winner
An Abbotsford woman won more than a million dollars at a Washington State casino on Monday. “Terry,” who did not want her last name revealed, was at Nooksack Northwood Casino in Lynden when she won while playing the Kingdom Cash slot machine linked to other casinos in the U.S. and which has a progressive jackpot. She took home the top prize of $1,031,235.
It is the first million-dollar jackpot won at Northwood.
