The women's federal prison in Abbotsford has been locked down after an altercation between two inmates sent the pair to hospital.

What sparked the dispute between the two women is still unknown, said Peter Lang, assistant warden at the Fraser Valley Institution for Women.

The two women were transported to an outside hospital by ambulance with non-life threatening injuries, and the Abbotsford Police are investigating.

The prison will continue to operate on a modified routine throughout the weekend, said Lang.

The prison is a multi-level facility and currently houses 55 inmates.
