Witnesses wanted
Investigators are looking for witnesses in the case of a man who drove the wrong way down Hwy. 1 and died of what appear to be self-inflicted knife wounds on Friday night. The 57-year-old driver of a Ford Explorer evaded a CounterAttack police road block on Sumas Way around 10:30 p.m. He then entered the highway and drove his SUV into oncoming traffic in the eastbound lanes of Highway 1, then the wrong way westbound, until his vehicle struck a police spike belt near No. 3 Road. When
officers pulled the man from the car they discovered he had stab wounds to his torso. Police are looking for motorists who witnessed the Explorer on the highway between 10:15 and 10:45 p.m. on Friday. Those with information are asked to call the IHIT tip line at 1-800-551-4448.
Maclure road closed
Maclure Road, between Clearbrook Road and Trethewey Street, will be closed from Nov. 5 to Nov. 20 to allow work to improve water and sewer services.
The city says motorists in the area will experience “long delays” and advises them to plan alternate routes. The closure is part of a City of Abbotsford plan to twin an existing water main that stretches between Gladwin Road, and the Maclure Reservoir west of Clearbrook Road.
Armed standoff
Abbotsford police and the emergency response team surrounded a house on George Ferguson Way for about an hour and a half Tuesday afternoon. Armed patrol officers and members of the Municipal Integrated Emergency Response Team took extra precautions when approaching the home in the 32100 block of George Ferguson Way as they had information the suspect might have a weapon, said Const. Ian MacDonald.
The mid-day siege ended with the arrest of a 23-year-old man for breaching conditions related to a previous domestic dispute.
