MP backs stricter terms for multiple murderers

Abbotsford MP Ed Fast is backing his party’s proposed legislation that would force murderers who have killed more than one person to serve consecutive life sentences.
Bill C-54 was tabled by Conservative Justice Minister Rob Nicholson last Wednesday. It calls for an end to mandatory concurrent sentences, under which parole eligibility remains the same regardless of the number of victims.
The new legislation would allow judges to impose consecutive life sentences of 25 years for killers convicted of committing more than one first or second-degree murder.
“Many Canadians have lost faith in our justice system,” said Fast.
“When multiple murders occur, our present system of sentencing places no value on the additional victims of the murderer. The family of a murder victim should not be left to feel as if the life of their loved one doesn’t count.”
