Read, enjoy, donate

Normally, fundraisers involve people getting together to support a common cause.

However, the Friends of the Abbotsford Libraries want people to do the opposite and stay home.

The third annual Stay Home and Read a Book Gala is set to run all of November and organizers are hopeful that supporters will send in donations.

The idea is simple. Instead of going out for dinner or catching a movie, stay home and read to your children or just curl up on the sofa and read by yourself.

Then, figure out how much money you saved by not going out and donate that to the library.

“This is the third year we’ve done this promotion,” says Jenny Matthews, president of the group.

The idea, which originated in Vancouver before coming out to the valley, seems to be growing in popularity as donations have increased each year. It’s a trend Matthews hopes will continue.

“It’s such a great cause, we hope people will keep supporting it.”

This year, funds raised will go to three specific projects – listening stations for teens, updating the adult reference section and new books for the children’s world language section.

Matthews says the campaign is a win-win situation as it raises needed funds while also promoting reading.

“Our mandate is to encourage people to read and promote reading with the family.”

She also points out that the library is one of the few free things left that people can do.

“And it isn’t just books, it’s CDs and DVDs.”
