An Abbotsford man has been missing since Friday after leaving a campground where he was visiting his wife and three daughters.
Jean Guy Potvin, 41, was last seen leaving the Delta Grove campground at Cultus Lake at about 8:30 p.m. on Sept. 11.
Chilliwack RCMP conducted extensive vehicle patrols throughout the Cultus Lake, Yarrow and Abbotsford areas to no avail. A search by the RCMP Air Services Helicopter also failed to find any sign of Jean or his 2004 burgundy Toyota Camry with licence plate 024 DCT.
The file is now being handled by the Abbotsford Police.
Jean's wife, Melanie, said he was headed home Friday night after visiting her and their three daughters – ages 9, 11 and 13 — for a couple of hours, as had been their routine throughout the summer.
Jean's family would spend weekends at local campgrounds, and he would visit them Friday evenings after work. He is a peer program associate with the B.C. Paraplegic Association (BCPA) in Vancouver.
He would then head back home to Abbotsford for the weekend, as it was more convenient for his personal care needs, and his wife and daughters would see him again on Sunday.
When Melanie had difficulty reaching him over the weekend, she wasn't too worried. Jean was scheduled to attend a BCPA event at Hastings Racecourse in Vancouver on Saturday. She thought he wasn't answering his cellphone either because he was too busy or because he had forgotten his phone at home.
By 9 o'clock that evening, she was worried enough to call a friend and ask her to stop by the home. The friend didn't see anything of concern, and Melanie assumed her husband was still at the BCPA event.
She expected to see him at home the next morning, but when she arrived, Melanie could see that Jean had not been there since he left for work Friday morning.
"That's when I freaked," she said.
Melanie reported him missing. She later learned that Jean had never shown up at Hastings Racecourse.
She said Jean's condition required him to head straight home from the campground on Friday – about a 20-minute drive. He then would have spent about 90 minutes preparing for bed.
She said for him to willingly disappear, and leave behind his family, would be completely out of character for him.
Jean is described as 5' 7" tall, weighing about 150 pounds. He has brown eyes and short brown hair with a receding hairline. He wears a medication pump and uses a back-folding wheelchair.
Jean was featured in a November 2006 Abbotsford News story about how he gets around using a Segway – a two-wheeled form of transportation on which he can stand.
Anyone who has seen Jean or his vehicle is asked to call the Abbotsford Police at 604-859-5225.
