Waste deal with Metro

The City of Abbotsford has renewed its agreement with Metro Vancouver to dispose of waste from the city to the Cache Creek landfill, potentially for three more years.

The original agreement was signed in April 1988, extended for an additional five years in 1994, and further extensions have followed.

The Cache Creek landfill is scheduled to close in the fall of 2010 (no precise date has been set). However, the landfill operators are asking the provincial environment ministry to allow dumping to continue in a seven-hectare annex next to the landfill. If approved, this could extend the life of the landfill by as much as two years.

Coun. Les Barkman noted that Metro transfer station tipping fees rose in July, from $3 per load under 140 kg up to $10. The tipping fee stayed at $71 per tonne. He noted that fees could rise again in January.
