Briefs: Mental health issues surround stabbing
Updated: August 26, 2009 5:58 PM
Abbotsford police believe that mental health issues may be at the root of a random stabbing that took place Sunday night.
“My understanding is that with this individual there will be a follow-up examination and treatment for mental health issues, and obviously consequences through the criminal justice process,” said Const. Ian MacDonald. The victim, a 35-year-old Abbotsford man, was stabbed at his residence in the 3200 block of Townline Road. Paramedics and police were called out after he knocked on his neighbour’s door for help.
He was treated at hospital for non-life threatening injuries.
The suspect, 33, was arrested at a gas station after fleeing the scene. He has had contact with police previously, but not for criminal matters.
Water on
The city’s water reservoirs are filling to satisfactory levels again, and residents are once again allowed to water their lawns. This week, the city lifted its lawn watering ban, and residents can again water twice per week in the early morning, from 6 a.m. to 8 a.m. Odd-numbered addresses can water on Thursday and Sunday, while even-numbered addresses water on Wednesday and Saturday.
Hand watering of vegetable
gardens and flowers is allowed at any time.
Medical
Building
Council approved first reading of a bylaw that would allow Dr. O. M. Sovio to rezone three residential properties at the corner of McCallum Road and Mayfair Avenue. The proposal is to change the property zoning to commercial use, allowing for a three-storey medical building with office space.
The proposal must return to council for final approval at a later date.
