Updated: August 13, 2009 3:58 PM
This weekend, the members of Abbotsford’s newest Sikh temple are joining forces with the RCMP, the Abbotsford Police Department, and the University of the Fraser Valley to share ideas on what average citizens can do to understand and help prevent gang violence.
A public forum slated for Sunday, Aug. 16 is the first of many that the Gurdwara Baba Banda Singh Bahadar Sikh Society is planning for the coming months.
Surjit Atwal is the driving force behind the new temple’s outreach efforts and organized this weekend’s event to be open and welcoming to all ages, all cultures, all ethnicities, and all faiths. The forum will feature the province’s and the region’s most prominent authorities on gang violence and crime prevention.
Dan Malo is the superintendent in charge of the RCMP’s BC Integrated Gang Task Force. He will speak about gang activity across the province and how it has evolved to its current state.
His presentation will be followed by a question and answer session involving a panel of experts on gang activity and criminal behaviour.
The public forum is slated for Aug. 16 at 2 p.m. at the new Gurdwara Baba Banda Singh Bahadar Sikh Society temple at 31631 South Fraser Way.
