City council has approved a new 41-unit affordable housing complex to be built on Clearbrook Road.

The Clearbrook Women’s Housing Project will house homeless mothers, or women at risk of homelessness, and their children.

The housing plan is a joint initiative between the Province of B.C. and the City of Abbotsford. Victoria is paying $11 million to build the facility and pay for its operating costs, while the city has donated the land.

The city is still hoping to identify the land to build another affordable housing development as part of the same government initiative. The province would provide the funding for that as well.

The women’s housing project, which will be built close to Matsqui Recreation Centre at 3096 Clearbrook Rd., will be managed around the clock by the Women’s Resource Centre of the Fraser Valley.

It was approved unanimously by city councillors at their meeting on Monday night.
