The Abbotsford Salvation Army joined many other agencies helping the people being affected by the fires that have been ravaging communities in the Interior.

Deb Lowell, public relations director, said the Sally Ann’s emergency service vehicle attended the communities of Kelowna and Vernon, as did several from other Salvation Army centres.

“We have had a team of people there for several days with another team on call to go at a moment’s notice,” said Lowell.

Higher bill

for AHL team

The bill to upgrade the home change rooms at the new Entertainment and Sports Centre, to make it suitable for an AHL team, appears higher than the price first quoted by city hall.

According to information made available through a freedom of information request, the final cost sits at $418,843. That differs from the $350,000 figure quoted by the city in mid-June.

The changes were requested by the management from the Calgary Flames, the parent club of the new Abbotsford Heat team. The arena was built under the assumption the ECHL (the East Coast Hockey League) – rather than the higher-calibre AHL – would be playing out of the facility.

Taking a toll

Traffic on the new Golden Ears Bridge dropped almost in half after tolls took effect July 16.

TransLink says 258,000 vehicles crossed the week before tolling began and that dropped to 134,000 in the week after.

That’s a 52 per cent retention rate, says spokesman Ken Hardie, adding that’s better than the 40 to 50 per cent expected.
