The Lougheed Highway in Deroche was closed to traffic in both directions for most of the day Friday after a dump truck heading towards Mission collided with an eastbound CP train.
The accident happened shortly after 9 a.m..
The dump truck and trailer were separated on impact as the truck was pushed a distance away, while the trailer remained on the east side of the tracks.
The driver managed to jump out of the vehicle to escape serious injury.
According the Mission RCMP, the man suffered an injury to his leg.
Witnesses also reported seeing two fires, one where the truck was struck and the second where it came to a rest.
Fred Schmold, who was one of the first people on scene, was working in his yard when he heard a loud bang.
He went to see what happened and helped put out the smaller fire with an extinguisher borrowed from a nearby store. But it was nothing compared to the fire at the actual engine, he said.
The highway was expected to be closed until at least 5 p.m. on Friday.
