Abbotsford celebrates Canada Day

Abbotsfordians came out in the thousands to celebrate Canada Day on Wednesday, lining up along South Fraser Way to watch the parade in the morning, and gazing skyward for the fireworks display at Exhibition Park as the day turned to night.
In between there was the family festival that included kids play zones, entertainment and community booths. And there was music by the the Celtic and Folk group Back Door Slam and Abbotsford's Canadian Idol finalist Greg Neufeld.
This year Musleh Hakki, the founder and organizer of the Abbotsford Multicultural Festival, brought promotion of his event to new heights. The 70-year-old Hakki jumped out of a plane at the Abbotsford Drop Zone. It was a tandem jump, and he trailed a banner promoting the festival.
Abbotsford MP Ed Fast was also on hand at the Gladwin Road parachute centre, and he too made a Canada Day jump.
The Multicultural Festival will take place on Sept. 26 at the Abbotsford Entertainment and Sports Centre, and Hakki said it is intended to increase awareness of multiculturalism and "develop strong bonds among people."
The day will feature ethnic food, arts, crafts, dancing and entertainment.
