Whether it be virtually new hybrids, or 20-year-old trucks doubling as farm vehicles, Abbotsford city councillors have an array of rides that get them to and from work.
A number of civic politicians said they may attempt to ditch their wheels, at least for a portion of the Civic Leaders Car Free Week, which runs from July 19 to 26. If they do, there will be a wide range of vehicles left in their garages.
Perhaps not surprisingly, Coun. Patricia Ross – who often makes environment issues her focus – drives a low-emission, sub-compact 2008 Toyota Yaris.
Smaller vehicles are also favoured by a number of city councillors.
Les Barkman favours a 2005 Lexus ES 330 sedan.
Dave Loewen drives a 2006 Honda Accord hybrid car, while Simon Gibson has a 2003 Acura TL.
Bill MacGregor’s current vehicle of choice is a 10-year-old Toyota Lexus.
John Smith gets around in a 2007 Toyota Camry sedan.
Living 17 kilometres from city hall, he says the chances of him biking to work during the Car Free Week are remote.
Coun. Lynne Harris says her large family brings with it a need for a large vehicle. She drives a 2008 Chevrolet Tahoe hybrid SUVwith a six-litre engine.
Moe Gill, a farmer in Abbotsford, says he is still happy with his 1989 Chevy half-ton truck.
Gill says he has been thinking about buying a new car, but combined with his wife’s 1999 Buick LeSabre, says he has enough vehicular options. He uses both vehicles while on council business.
